Chair of University Pension Plan Ontario (UPP) Board of Trustees
The Joint Sponsors of University Pension Plan Ontario (UPP) are seeking a distinguished and independent leader to serve as Chair of UPP Board of Trustees. UPP is a jointly sponsored, multi-university pension plan delivering sustainable, defined benefit pensions across Ontario’s university sector. UPP serves over 41,000 members and manages $12.8 billion in assets.
As Chair, you will lead a diverse Board in fulfilling its fiduciary and governance responsibilities and its oversight of UPP’s CEO and Executive Leadership Team. You will provide strategic oversight and guidance to the Board and its Committees ensuring UPP’s long-term vision, mission, and goals are effectively pursued, aligning Board activities with strategic priorities to fulfil the pension promise, and monitoring progress toward key outcomes. You will promote transparency and accountability, build consensus through participatory decision-making, and represent the Board in key relationships with the Joint Sponsors and external partners.
This is a high-impact, five-year term for a seasoned professional with direct or relatable experience in pension plan governance, administration, member services, and/or financial or pension investment management, and direct or relatable experience working in unionized environments and in collective bargaining processes. Strong familiarity with Ontario’s university sector is desirable. You will possess well-developed leadership, communication, and relationship building skills and a thorough understanding of the responsibilities and expectations of fiduciaries, preferably pension plan fiduciaries.
